A judgment of divorce from a state court in the U.S. may be recognized overseas. You may want to consult an attorney in the foreign country to find out if your U.S. divorce would be recognized there. Most U.S. embassies and consulates abroad have lists of local lawyers that you can find posted on their websites. 

Will a foreign divorce be recognized in the United States?

• States may recognize foreign divorces. States may also consider whether both parties had notice of the divorce and a chance to be heard in the divorce process.
• Specific questions about foreign divorces in a particular U.S. state should be directed to that state’s Office of the Attorney General. A private attorney in that state may be able to help if the state Attorney General cannot.
